Bangladesh’s history in the cement industry is relatively new compared to other countries’ deep-rooted legacy of construction materials. The first attempt to produce cement dates back to 1941 in “Chattak Cement Factory Ltd.” But after the emergence of Bangladesh, the cement industry was aiming to rise high. In the early 1990s, many cement manufacturers entered the industry. In the following decade, a good number of small, large, and big cement manufacturers stepped into the game.<\/span><\/p>\n

The dependency on imports gradually decreased while the manufacturing capacity increased within the country. The growth of the cement industry quadrupled during the 2008 to 2018 period. As many as 76 cement manufacturing companies were registered, but 42 large, medium, and small-scale companies are currently operating. These manufacturers now can produce about 58 million tons against the demand of around 31 million tons.<\/span><\/p>\n

However, among all these companies, the industry is dominated by only ten companies, including two multinationals. These ten companies comprise more than 75% of the market share. There was a time when foreign cement manufacturers dominated the market. However, foreign companies are facing intense competition from local ones.<\/span><\/p>\n

The local cement manufacturers in Bangladesh relied only on the 50kg bagged cement for an extended period. The manufacturers distributed the cement bags through various 3<\/span>rd<\/span> party suppliers in the country. On top of that, cement producers are not limiting themselves to producing Ordinary Portland Cement<\/span><\/a>. The companies have introduced Portland Pozzolana Cement or Portland Slag Cement. Some manufacturers create different kinds of specialized cement.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

It is predicted that the construction sector in general and cement sector, in particular, will grow further riding on the dense population, increasing life expectancy, rapid construction of economic zones, substantial investments in the socio-economic development of ordinary people, enhancing farmlands and agricultural scope, and the thriving garment sector in Bangladesh. The Government of Bangladesh has invested heavily in infrastructure development, especially in power generation plants, highways, roads, bridges, tunnels, buildings, metro, etc. Hence, the cement industry will undoubtedly play a crucial role in achieving the Government’s vision of becoming a developed nation by the end of 2041.<\/span><\/p>\n

In 2018, per capita, cement consumption in Bangladesh was about 182kg.<\/span> The impact of Covid-19 on the cement industry in Bangladesh<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a> during 2020 \u2013 2021 reduced cement consumption by a large margin. But experts predict it will reach around 250kg by the end of 2022.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
